IBM 6152 ACADEMIC SYSTEM IBM Announcement Letter Number 188-033 dated February 2, 1988 IBM US - Last Revised on February 2, 1988 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 6152 Academic System is an advanced function workstation designed for academic computing applications in a local area network (LAN) environment. The IBM 6152 combines an IBM Personal System/2 (TM) Model 60 processor with a 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) processor similar to the IBM RT PC (TM) processor, together with a Motorola MC68881 floating point processor. The primary operating system for the 6152 is the IBM Academic Operating System 4.3 (IBM/4.3) which is limited to colleges and universities eligible for the IBM educational allowance. The IBM/4.3 operating system is derived from the 4.3 Berkeley Software Distribution (4.3 BSD) version of a UNIX (1) operating system. The X Window System, version 11 is provided as an integral part of IBM/4.3. The X Window System is a network-transparent windowing system that provides a base for the operation of application programs. Both IBM Token-Ring and Ethernet (2) local area networks are supported on the IBM 6152. The 6152 is also supported by the DOS 3.3 and OS/2 Standard 1.0 operating systems. When operating under DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0 the 6152 does not use the RISC processor or RISC RAM storage. It combines an IBM Personal System/2 Model 60 processor with a 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) processor that is similar to the IBM RT PC processor, together with a Motorola MC68881 floating point processor. The 6152 runs under three operating systems: o Academic Operating System 4.3 (4.3/6152) (PRPQ 5799-PFF) which is a full function multitasking Berkeley 4.3 BSD version of a UNIX operating system. See PRPQ 5799-PFF Announcement dated February 2, 1988, for details. o DOS 3.3 o OS/2 Standard 1.0 Only one operating system can run at any time. The IBM Academic System 6152 is software compatible with the IBM RT PC processor running applications under the IBM Academic Operating System 4.3 for the RT PC (hereafter referred to as 4.3/RT). The 6152 is also software compatible with PS/2 Models 50, 60 and 80 running applications under PC DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0 When running under 4.3/RT, the 6152 produced the results shown below on the industry standard Dhrystone Version 1.1 and Whetstone benchmarks. Dhrystones 3394 DPS Whetstones Single-Precision 538 KWIPS Double-Precision 625 KWIPS This performance is well suited to academic graphics and computational applications. o Special Features - 44Mb Fixed Disk (#3046): One 44Mb fixed disk can be installed as a second disk on Models 044 and 048. #3046 can replace one or two 20Mb disks on Models 022 and 024. Both fixed disks on a 6152 must be the same size. - 70Mb Fixed Disk (#3051): One 70Mb fixed disk can be installed as a second disk on a Model 074 and 078. #3051 can replace one or two 20Mb or 44Mb disks on Models 022, 024, 044 and 048. Both fixed disks on a 6152 must be the same size. - 4Mb RISC Memory Upgrade Kit (#8001): For 6152 Model 022 replaces the 2Mb RISC memory with a 4Mb RISC memory. - 8Mb RISC Memory Upgrade Kit (#8002): For 6152 Model 044 or 074. Replaces the standard 4Mb RISC Memory on a 6152 Model 044 or 074 with an 8Mb RISC Memory. o Personal System/2 Model 60 Features All features and accessories announced for the PS/2 Model 60 that are supported by DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0 are supported when the 6152 operates under DOS 3.3 or OS/2 Standard 1.0. See today's PRPQ 5799-PFF Announcement for a list of the PS/2 Model 60 features supported when the 6152 operates under the 4.3/6152 Operating System.
