Systems management has a combination of hardware and software innovations that together provide the tools necessary to manage large complex LANs running mission critical applications. Key features include an 80C186-based, battery-backed Remote Maintenance Processor (RMP). This is a single-board processor that comes standard with each system. It provides non-intrusive local and remote server monitoring, configuration tuning, control and unattended failure recover capabilities. The PS/2 Server 295 is ideally suited as an application database or NetWare server for mission critical applications. It allows many clients fast reliable access to this data and enhances the productivity of the entire customer organization. Because the PS/2 Server 295 supports OS/2 LAN Server and NetWare, customers can install the PS/2 Server 295 into current environments without going through time consuming and expensive application conversions. MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEM: MASS/2, an OS/2- and NetWare-based software application, works with the RMP on the PS/2 Server 295 and provides an interface for managing functions, such as: o Automatic reboot and reconfiguration o Comprehensive error logging o Selective error notification including dial-out capability o Fail-safe access if a power outage o Remote power cycling and system configuration o Warning alarms o User and administrative password security o Remote console capabilities. With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 295 can be geographically distributed across large organizations while retaining the ability to be managed in a centralized support location. MASS/2 provides continual monitoring of resources and system critical parameters. In addition, remote power cycling and system configuration control, and alarm parameters are all possible with the comprehensive system management capabilities. NOTE: MASS/2, a prerequisite, is required to fully exploit the system architecture (available for preload on the PS/2 Server 295) and must be ordered separately. For more information on MASS/2, refer to Programming Announcement 292-302, dated June 2, 1992. IMPROVED USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 Server 295 is a build-to-order system with IBM hardware and software options installed and tested at the IBM manufacturing site. This means less time spent on configuration and more time to devote to customer applications. RELIABILITY AND AVAILABILITY: This system is designed for high reliability and availability to the clients, while providing an easy-to-use comprehensive system management tool (MASS/2) for the system administrator. Reliability is designed into the system by enabling redundant components. For example, subsystems such as processors, Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), memory, disk drive and power can be configured to be redundant through selection of various options available on the PS/2 Server 295. High availability is ensured through a combination of hardware and software. The ability to configure redundant hardware subsystems, combined with the capabilities of the system management software (MASS/2) to detect failures and continue to run without human intervention, provides powerful tools to maximize system availability for clients on the LAN. This high availability translates into higher customer productivity for all users across the LAN. MULTIPROCESSOR DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE: The multiprocessor design of the server uses one 486/33MHz and one 486/50MHz processor, or dual 486/50MHz processors. The dual processors are connected to a high-speed 200MB per second, 64-bit wide parity protected bus. The processors use a second level cache of 128KB or 256KB and communicate to memory via four independent memory controllers. The system can support up to 128MB of ECC main memory and 28GB of mass storage supported by two RISC SCSI controllers and four SCSI buses providing the customer with a variety of expansion choices and high reliability. Another key feature to improved performance is the unique IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array products. One product for OS/2, another for NetWare. This software not only provides high performance with RAID-5 levels of data protection, but with the MASS/2 software, can even protect against failures of a SCSI controller or channel. ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION Key features and attributes: o System configured and tested before shipment o Dual standard 486/33-50MHz with 128/256KB level two cache on Model 001 o Dual standard 486/50-50MHz with 256KB level two cache on Model 002 o Four independent memory controllers o Two or four SCSI channels o "Hot pluggable" disk drive enabled o Parity checking all buses o 1.44MB diskette drive (standard) o IBM 7855 External Modem (standard) o Redundant power supply (optional) o Hardware and software enabled for universal power supply o Remote Maintenance Processor (standard) o New IBM LANStreamer MC 32 Adapter supported (#8942). Also announced today are four new IBM applications designed to complement the PS/2 Server 295 system in a NetWare environment. o IBM Maximum Availability and Support System/2 for NetWare (MASS/2 NW) is an innovative system management package that provides the capability to manage large geographically diverse networks from a central point within an organization. MASS/2 NW, a prerequisite, is required to fully use the system architecture. MASS/2 NW may be preloaded for customer convenience. o IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 for NetWare (MP/2 NW) enables the dual processor operation on the PS/2 Server 295 and since both models of the 295 are now multi-processing; this is a prerequisite for the 295. o Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 for NetWare (Disk Array/2 NW) supports multiple arrays of up to 16 drives, providing large capacity and performance for client/server applications. o Parallel Network Array for NetWare (PNA/NW) provides "hot" standby fault tolerance for LAN network adapters. This new software package for the NetWare environment provides additional protection and "hot" hand off if a network adapter card fails, assuring the highest possible levels of availability for the clients on the LAN. PRODUCT POSITIONING The PS/2 Server 295, now with standard dual 486 processors, IBM OS/2 and NetWare support, is designed to provide the highest levels of performance, fault tolerance, scaleability and system management available in the PS/2 server family. Perfect for customer's mission-critical applications, the PS/2 Server 295 combines hardware and software to provide high levels of system availability and management. The high-speed disk subsystem, for example, uses SCSI controllers connected to a high-speed interprocessor bus for performance and at the same time, allows disks to be spread across up to four channels. This design when combined with the Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 software provides an integrated solution with high levels of performance, fault tolerance and system management. The PS/2 Server 295 has other features to ensure the highest levels of system availability. These include ECC memory, on line disk spares, redundant power supplies, a standard Remote Maintenance Processor with modem, plus the Maximum Availability and Support System/2 software that ties it all together in a comprehensive system solution. This is a build-to-order system with preloaded software tested at the factory and installed at the customer site by IBM trained personnel.
