IBM's experience in designing and operating business-critical mid-range and mainframe systems was used to maximum advantage in the development of the PC Server 720 systems. The systems provide exceptional levels of price, performance, reliability, and availability from the server itself and from the "connected" environment of the Server 720. Reliability Features Server reliability is a key requirement in today's LANs. Failure or poor performance affects everyone connected to the LAN, not just a single user. Therefore, minimizing server problems or downtime is imperative to the operational aspects of a business, whether small, medium, or large. To accomplish this, the Server 720 incorporates hardware designs and, with the appropriate software and options support, it provides high reliability, minimal disruption to business, and greater overall LAN availability. Software and options support includes error correcting memory, data/address integrity checking as information uses the I/O bus, hard disk data storage security with use of up to RAID-5 capability, hard disk hot-swap capability, hard disk Predictive Failure Analysis, automatic rebuilding of data after a hard disk failure, protection from power transients or losses with the UPS option, and internal temperature monitoring/control. * Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory is standard ECC memory enhances data integrity by detecting and automatically correcting single bit errors. The capability for detection and correction also applies to data addressing to minimize lost data due to data storage location corruption. * Micro Channel architecture with bus parity Bus parity checking enhances data transfer integrity across the I/O bus from the server to added adapters. In a multiprocessor configuration, a cache coherency algorithm ensures that system-wide data use of cache is not corrupted. * RAID capability Provides the capability to write data on multiple hard disks with the ability to automatically reconstruct data that resides on a failed hard disk to a new hard disk, to minimize or eliminate downtime for the server or connected environment. * Hot-swap hard disks In the event of a disk failure, this capability, coupled with RAID implementation and the appropriate software, allows the system to stay up while problem correction occurs. * NetFinity Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) support This powerful tool alerts the system manager to a possible occurrence of hard disk failure (24 to 48 hours prior to), allowing preventative maintenance to occur before an actual failure. PFA, coupled with RAID implementation, hot-swap capability, and appropriate software support for automatic hard disk data reconstruction, provides for scheduled maintenance and a high degree of system (connected environment) up time. * FloThru subsystem The Server 720 has a temperature monitoring and reporting subsystem controlling a three-speed variable fan subsystem that does not allow the internal temperatures inside the server to rise high enough to cause component/subsystem performance or reliability problems. * Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) support The Server 720 ships with power control/management software and physical connection capability to the UPS option available from IBM. This availability provides system performance reliability (data integrity/loss) for power transients and a controlled shut-down capability to preserve data when loss of power occurs. * Pre-ship testing IBM pre-ship testing includes vibration, drop test, and system burn-in at manufacturing site. Performance Features To increase end-user productivity, each subsystem in the Server 720 is designed to support and/or deliver a high degree of system performance. Features include: * Intel's newest high-performance CPU with Pentium architecture and an internal microprocessor speed of 100MHz * Processor-dedicated, write-back L2 and L3 caches o L2 (512KB) cache (2-way associative write back) with dual tagging that assists in maintaining processor performance o L3 cache improves the cache hit rate and enhances performance * A 64-bit MP (multiprocessor) bus that supports data burst transfer rates of up to 400MB/sec * 256-bit memory data bus (4-way interleaved memory) * Supports high-speed, 60ns ECC memory to achieve memory data transfer rates up to 50MHz/sec * Synchronous main bus architecture enables split bus operation and accommodates mixed processors of different speeds * SCSI-2 Fast/Wide and SCSI-2 Fast/Wide RAID controllers that support data transfer rates of up to 20Mb/sec * High-performance hard disk drives * Hard disk hot-swap capability that minimizes down time * Support for 80MB/sec data transfer burst mode on Micro Channel bus * Support for 132MB/sec PCI bus * Support of data streaming busmaster adapters, LAN adapters Expansion Features The exceptional expansion capacity of PC Server 720 systems meets today's high-function configuration needs. PC Server 720 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EPROM on the system board into system memory. This BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PC Server 720 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on personal computers and PS/2 family systems. However, due to higher-speed processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification. Limitations: The PC Server 720 supports a maximum of 1GB of ECC memory. Maximum system memory can be achieved in all models with 32MB ECC SIMMs. The PC Server 720 supports 8MB, 16MB, and 32MB ECC memory SIMMs (60ns). All memory SIMMs must be installed in sets of eight; 8MB SIMMs cannot be mixed on the same card with 16MB and 32MB SIMMs. Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating systems limitations. High-performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory, and an additional 256KB is reserved for installing options that may require additional memory for BIOS shadowing. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The PC Server 720 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the system. The PC Server 720 is installable by IBM or an IBM authorized remarketer. Contact your IBM representative or IBM authorized remarketer to arrange for installation. ServerGuide Information: ServerGuide is available when shipped as part of a PC Server 720 and is not available for separate purchase. ServerGuide CDs contain encrypted software products. When you receive your IBM server system, you can order activation keys to unlock and install the software products you order. Each ServerGuide package contains a unique ServerGuide license number, which must be specified on your software order with the software product part number. The ServerGuide license number and the part number are used by IBM to generate the activation key, which is returned to the customer. The activation key can then be used to decrypt and install the software product. A product order form is included in ServerGuide documentation delivered with the PC Server 720. The following software products are available. The remarketer then sends a copy of the fax to the customer. Proof of entitlement to use one copy of the software product consists of a copy of the IBM fax containing the activation key and a copy of the ServerGuide license diskette label showing the diskette serial number. The customer should attach a copy of the IBM fax to the copy of the diskette label and keep it as proof of entitlement. (For IBM customers ordering through IBM representatives, the same proof of entitlement applies. In this case, the fax containing the activation key will normally be transmitted directly from IBM to the customer.) Cable Orders: Except for system power, keyboard, and display connections, there are no cabling requirements. Cables are provided with the system unit and display, and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. An additional cable is supplied for the optional UPS. Installability: The PC Server 720 models require approximately 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other adapters, an operating system, and other features. Memory: The 8MB, 16MB, and 32MB SIMMs must be installed in sets of eight per bank. To enable 4-way interleaved memory for enhanced performance: * Do not mix 8MB SIMMs with 16MB or 32MB SIMMs on a card. * Do not mix 16MB and 32MB memory within a bank, but you can mix the memory card. For any memory card, the largest SIMM must be in bank 1 (the left bank when the card is face up). When both cards are installed, the card with the largest SIMM size must be fully populated with SIMMs of the same size. The following table shows allowable memory configurations. There are eight SIMMs of each type per bank. Total Memory Card 1 Memory Card 2 System Bank1 Bank2 Bank1 Bank2 Memory 32MB 256MB 32MB 32MB 512MB 32MB 32MB 32MB 768MB 32MB 32MB 32MB 32MB 1.0GB 32MB 32MB 32MB 16MB 896MB 32MB 16MB 384MB 32MB 32MB 16MB 640MB 32MB 32MB 16MB 16MB 768MB 32MB 32MB 8MB 576MB 32MB 32MB 8MB 8MB 640MB 16MB 128MB 16MB 16MB 256MB 16MB 16MB 16MB 384MB 16MB 16MB 16MB 16MB 512MB 16MB 16MB 8MB 320MB 16MB 16MB 8MB 8MB 384MB 8MB 64MB 8MB 8MB 128MB 8MB 8MB 8MB 192MB 8MB 8MB 8MB 8MB 256MB 0-512MB Memory Card: The 0-512MB Memory Card option comes with no memory installed. Memory SIMMs of 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB must be installed in sets of eight per bank. There are two banks of eight sockets each on the card; therefore, it is possible to install a maximum of 512MB per card using 16 32MB SIMMs. All models of the PC Server 720 come with one memory card installed, populated with a total of 64MB of ECC memory. A maximum of two memory cards can be installed in the system for a total maximum system memory of 2 x 512MB cards or 1GB of system memory. If a second memory card is installed, five is the maximum number of CPU cards in the system. PC Server 720 SMP 100 MHz Processor Option: All systems come standard with one Pentium 100MHz processor. Additional processors can be added incrementally up to a system maximum of six processor options. If two memory cards are installed, a system maximum of five processors is allowed. 24/48GB Internal Tape Autoloader: This six-cartridge autoloader fits in the 5.25 full-high bay on the PC Server 720. Unlike many autoloaders, the cartridge is contained in the 5.25 full-high form factor that allows the system door to close while the autoloader is in use. This maintains autoloader, diskette drive, and CD-ROM drive security. Using compression on six cartridges, this is a DDS-2 DAT drive capable of backing up 48GB of data. It has a typical sustained transfer rate of 1.0MB/second. This autoloader is also compatible with the PC Server 500 Series and the non-array models of the PC Server 300 Series. The Array models of the PC Server 500 and 720 require the IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A (70G8498) and the IBM SCSI-2 16-Bit Internal Cable (32G3921). The Autoloader option kit contains: * 24GB to 48GB autoloader * SCSI wide-to-narrow adapter * Power cable * One six-cartridge magazine * Five data cartridges * One cleaning cartridge * User's manual SCSI PCI Option Card to Backplane F/W Cable: This cable allows attachment of a second or third backplane in the Server 720. The cable can be used with: * PC Server SCSI-2 F/W PCI-Bus RAID (#3985, 94G2764) * PC Server SCSI-2 F/W PCI Adapter (#4276, 94G3771) One cable is required for each backplane. System Bays: The system comes standard with one six-connector SCSI hot-swap backplane. Two additional backplanes (Hot-Swap Backplane: #3961, 70G9740) can be installed. Each backplane can hold: * Six one-inch drives * Three half-high drives * Two one-inch and two half-high drives * Four one-inch and one half-high drives In addition, there is an open full-high or two half-high bays available in the upper left area of the system unit next to the standard CD-ROM. IBM PC Server Power Supply Upgrade (#3959, 70G9739): This option is required to support the installation of the second and third hot-swap backplane. ServerGuide -- Automated Installation: ServerGuide comes in a package that contains a license diskette and a set of compact discs. When you are ready to install your new PC Server 720, insert the first CD into the CD-ROM drive and start the server. An easy-to-use graphical interface guides you through simple steps to install and configure the operating system of your choice. OS/2 2.11, OS/2 2.11 SMP, LAN Server 3.01 and 4.0 Entry, LAN Server 3.01 and 4.0 Advanced, TCP/IP 2.0, NetWare from IBM 3.12 and 4.02, and System Performance Monitor/2 are stored in encrypted form on the ServerGuide CDs ready to install. The ServerGuide menus guide you through a series of configuration choices after which you type in a unique activation key (obtained from your IBM Authorized Dealer or IBM representative) to unlock the software and install it. During this process, ServerGuide automatically detects and identifies your specific hardware configuration and fills in all configuration choices with sensible defaults. You can simply accept ServerGuide's suggestions or change them to meet your requirements. ServerGuide then automatically installs the device drivers you need. Packaging: One box Shipment Group * System unit * Keyboard with attached cable * Welcome letter * System library * ServerGuide * Diagnostic diskette * Mouse * UPS cable Security, Auditability, and Control Security and audibility features of these servers are: * A mechanical lock allows you to lock the system cover and media bays. * Tamper-evident switches sense unauthorized access, notify users when the system is powered-on, or suspend operations if the system is already powered on. * Power-on password prevents unauthorized use of the system. * Privileged access password, a second level password, activates special electronics on the system board, which totally prevents unauthorized system use. * Set keyboard password locks the keyboard without turning the system off. * C2 Security is enabled with the optionally installed PC Server Security Cover. * Set unattended start mode allows locking of the keyboard to all entries except the password and allows other computers on the network to access the disk storage at the same times. * Selectable boot sequence denies unauthorized installation software or removal of data from the diskette drive. * Use of a common "U" bolt attached to the back frame provides the server with tie-down capability. * Keyboardless and displayless support (when the server is configured with the appropriate network operating system) minimizes the risk of unauthorized tampering with the system software and configuration. Limitations: SCSI, as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The enhanced SCSI with cache electronic modules, which are a part of some models of the PC Server 720, is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. A data security exposure exists, even with power-on password installed, since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
