Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o 12.5MHz Intel 80C186 microprocessor o Up to 2MB on-board user memory o Adapter-to-system and adapter-to-adapter Micro Channel bus master support o Up to eight serial input/output ports (asynchronous or synchronous) available through a family of Interface Boards and cables o Performance of up to 64K bps full-duplex for each of eight ports running concurrently o Performance up to 2.048M bps full-duplex for single port o Real time, multi-tasking kernel DESCRIPTION The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster Adapter/A is a full-function Micro Channel bus master co-processor that complements and extends the capabilities of the current IBM Realtime Interface Co-Processor family adapters. Bus master extensions for the adapter include capabilities and services which address both adapter-to-system and adapter-to-adapter data transfers under direct memory access (DMA) control. The adapter utilizes the multi-master capability of the Micro Channel bus architecture by taking control of the system unit bus and communicating directly with system memory or with other I/O adapters without interrupting the system unit processor. All Realtime Interface Co-Processor family adapters are user programmable, utilize Intel 80186 microprocessors, and support the off-loading of multiple, real time, high-speed tasks. Application examples include communications control, data conversion, protocol handling and terminal interface support. A variety of electrical interfaces are supported through attachment of Interface Boards and cables. With the selection of the appropriate Interface Board, full-duplex data rates of up to 64K bps running simultaneously on each of eight ports or up to 2.048M bps for a single port can be achieved with the Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster Adapter/A. High-speed data rates for multiple ports are accomplished using DMA; two channels are provided for each port. Actual performance may vary depending on the user's application. All ports can be programmed for asynchronous, bit synchronous and character synchronous protocols, using either DMA or interrupt mode; however, performance will be reduced by using interrupt mode. Microcode for the Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster Adapter/A is included with the Guide to Operations and is loaded from the system unit memory to the adapter memory. Up to 248 real time tasks can be loaded from the system unit memory and executed concurrently on the card. A task running on the adapter may communicate with another task running on the same adapter, with an application running in the system unit, or with an application running on another adapter. Task synchronization is accomplished by a wait/post or suspend/resume mechanism. The adapter storage (512K, 1MB or 2MB) is dynamically managed in multiples of 16-byte paragraphs upon request of a task. The top 1MB of the 2MB adapter is accessed via a bank-switching technique. Up to 255 software timers with increments ranging from 5 milliseconds to 327 seconds are provided, in addition to a hardware "watchdog" timer function to signal the host if the adapter fails. Detailed information on the operation characteristics of this adapter is provided in the optional REALTIME INTERFACE CO-PROCESSOR PORTMASTER ADAPTER/A TECHNICAL REFERENCE (S33F-5337) and information regarding the microcode is provided in the optional REALTIME INTERFACE CO-PROCESSOR FIRMWARE TECHNICAL REFERENCE (S33F-5336). RELATED FEATURES The following features are used with the Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster Adapter/A to provide a variety of electrical interfaces and cabling. EIGHT-PORT RS-232 INTERFACE BOARD/A The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Eight-Port RS-232 Interface Board/A provides the appropriate drivers and receivers to support eight serial I/O ports of RS-232-D/CCITT V.24. Protocols for these electrical interfaces are user programmable. The interface board attaches to the Portmaster Adapter/A and includes a 100-pin connector for external communication. Asynchronous or synchronous modes may be individually selected for each of the eight ports. All ports are supported at up to 38.4K bps full-duplex running concurrently. Actual performance may vary depending on the user's application. EIGHT-PORT RS-422 INTERFACE BOARD/A The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Eight-Port RS-422 Interface Board/A provides the appropriate drivers and receivers to support eight serial I/O ports of RS-422-A or X.21. Protocols for these electrical interfaces are user programmable. The interface board attaches to the Portmaster Adapter/A and includes a 100-pin connector for external communication. Asynchronous or synchronous modes may be selected individually for each of the eight ports. The following full-duplex data rates are supported by Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster Adapter/A using this interface board. o One port, running alone - synchronous, using external clocking at 2.048M bps - asynchronous, using internal clocking at 115.2K bps o Eight ports, running concurrently - synchronous, using external clocking at 64K bps - synchronous, using internal DPLL clocking at 57.6K bps - asynchronous, using internal clocking at 57.6K bps Actual performance may vary depending on the user's application. EIGHT-PORT CABLE The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Eight-Port Cable is used in conjunction with either the Eight-Port RS-232 or Eight-Port RS-422 Interface Boards. The cable connects a 100-pin connector on the Interface Board to eight 25-pin connectors (RS-232-D/CCITT V.24/ISO 2110 standard) housed in a molded block at the end of this cable. SURGE PROTECTION ADAPTER The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Surge Protection Adapter is required in conjunction with the Eight-Port RS-422 Interface Board/A and Eight-Port Cable for each port where the cable-run will exceed 400 feet in length or will exit the establishment. This adapter consists of two 25-pin connectors connected by the appropriate surge protection circuitry. NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT The GUIDE TO OPERATIONS is packaged with the adapters and will be available in English, French and Spanish. PUBLICATIONS The REALTIME INTERFACE CO-PROCESSOR PORTMASTER ADAPTER/A GUIDE TO OPERATIONS is shipped with the adapter. The manual includes setup and installation instructions and a diskette that contains the control microcode, adapter description file and diagnostics. Additional copies will not be available.
