IBM PS/2 ServerGuard May 24, 1994 Announcement Number: 194-184 Abstract IBM is re-announcing the PS/2(R) ServerGuard option, originally announced September 21, 1993. The ServerGuard now supports OS/2(R) and OS/2 LAN Server. NetWare support for the ServerGuard option will be available September 19, 1994, for Versions 3.11, 3.12 and 4.0. The ServerGuard option is a server management solution that consists of: * A power control box * Micro Channel(R) bus master-based card with a remote maintenance processor and an integrated PCMCIA modem * NetFinity Software: o IBM NetFinity ServerGuard Service for OS/2 o IBM NetFinity Manager for OS/2 (includes IBM NetFinity Services) o IBM PS/2 ServerGuard MASS/2 Monitor The ServerGuard option enhances all supported Micro Channel servers running OS/2 LAN Server by providing online management capability of the server. The ServerGuard option monitors internal temperatures, voltages, and preset server performance conditions. With the ServerGuard option the administrator can manage the performance of the server. The ServerGuard allows reboot and power on/off control of the server system. The ServerGuard option increases an administrator's ability to monitor and control server resources, improves server reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) capabilities, and provides information on server status. The ServerGuard interacts with either local or remote systems connected via various communications options. These options include phone line (modem), local area network (LAN), or local server ports (video/keyboard or serial). ServerGuard provides: * PCMCIA modem (shipped with card) and LAN communications * Server environment monitors * LAN Access to configuration information * Server power control and system reset capabilities controlled automatically or by real-time commands * Alerts triggered by thresholds that can be preset by the user * The ability to direct alerts to pagers, LANs, remote or local systems * A battery backup designed to allow communications with the ServerGuard card during server power outages or when the administrator has powered the server down * Levels of security and password protection * Comprehensive error logging * Remote (LAN) console/remote ASYNC access capabilities * Remote (LAN) file transfer to and from the server * Remote (LAN) entry of operating system commands for execution * Compliance with emerging LAN management standards and protocols Single Unit Price: $1,325 Availability Date: May 24, 1994 (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation IN BRIEF . . . +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | | | The PS/2 ServerGuard option: | | | | o Monitors server operating environment | | | | o Notifies the LAN administrator if preset operating limits are | | exceeded | | | | o Battery backup allows remote access to NVRAM status logs | | during power outages | | | | o Provides multiple levels of security with password protection | | | | o Provides access to server configuration information | | | | o Complies with emerging LAN management standards and protocols | | | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ DESCRIPTION Notification of Potential Server Problems The IBM PS/2 ServerGuard and its associated software will monitor the server's operating environment and notify the administrator if preset operating limits are exceeded or if a power outage occurs. Notification can be over the LAN, or via self contained modem to a pager. Early detection of potential problems will enhance the administrator's ability to find and correct problems before they reduce the performance level of the server. User Productivity ServerGuard, with its associated software, provides important functions key to improving user productivity. NetFinity for OS/2 applications run under OS/2 and follow the SAA(R)/SNA guidelines, which ensure a consistent interface and higher productivity. IBM PS/2 ServerGuard MASS/2 Monitor runs under Windows 3.x or a Windows session of OS/2 on the remote ASYNC system. ServerGuard and its associated software, NetFinity for OS/2 and IBM PS/2 ServerGuard MASS/2 Monitor, provide a graphical interface for managing functions, such as: * Automatic reboot * Comprehensive error logging * Selective error notification including dial-out to a pager capability * Remote (LAN) file transfer to and from the server * Remote (LAN) entry of operating system commands for execution * Fail-safe access to the ServerGuard card in case of power outage * Remote power cycling * Warning alarms * Password security * Remote session capabilities Advantages for Remote Users and System Administrators The PS/2 Server with the ServerGuard option provides the capability to monitor and control the PS/2 Server from local or remote locations. With ServerGuard and its associated software, PS/2 Servers can be geographically distributed across large organizations while retaining the ability to be managed in a centralized support location. The ServerGuard option provides continual monitoring of resources and system environmental parameters. In addition, remote power cycling and alarm/alert generation are all possible with ServerGuard and its associated software's comprehensive hardware system management capabilities. ServerGuard and NetFinity for OS/2's features are available from the server system, or from any PC on the network. Using IBM PS/2 ServerGuard MASS/2 Monitor from a remote ASYNC system, the LAN administrator can check and set alarm parameters, display server temperature, server voltages, and power condition. Additionally the LAN administrator can power on/off or recycle power on the server. With ServerGuard and its associated software, LAN Servers can be easily managed whether they are local or thousands of miles away. Messages, Statistics and Logs Warning parameters for the system can be set with the ServerGuard option. Once set, the system automatically sends warning alerts to users, dials out to remote pagers, or shuts down if operational limits such as temperature or voltages reach unacceptable limits. ServerGuard information is displayed graphically, and more detail is available at the click of the mouse. The ServerGuard option makes system operational statistics, such as CPU, memory, and disk capacity utilization, available in real time. NetFinity for OS/2 displays a record of the last 10 seconds to 10 days (user selectable) for each statistic. The statistics can be stored to disk for long-term storage and analyses. ServerGuard records all critical events in a non-volatile (NVRAM) log, easily accessed for review. Because the ServerGuard is battery-backed, the log can always be accessed even if the server is not operating. System Recovery ServerGuard detects software timeouts (operating system stopped or hung), by monitoring a series of watchdog timers. When a failure is detected, response could be an auto reboot, or an alert message or page to the LAN administrator, dependent upon preset parameters. The PS/2 Server with the ServerGuard option provides the LAN administrator with very high levels of management control and assures clients that system availability will be maximized. Centralized Control Improvement The IBM PS/2 ServerGuard option allows multiple servers to be managed from a central location. This can provide greater efficiency and control by allowing a single administrator to manage an increased number of servers without spending equivalent additional time at the server locations. Improved Systems Availability ServerGuard will contact the administrator if preset thresholds are reached, or if the monitored server encounters an alert condition or power failure. This ensures that the administrator is aware of the potential problem before server performance is impacted. In case of a power failure the administrator is immediately notified by the ServerGuard option and can be aware of the problem before the users begin to respond. Notification of potential and occurring errors results in both high performance and high availability in a server that will continue to meet the customer's needs. PRODUCT POSITIONING The ServerGuard option should be offered to customers who are running mission critical applications. When servers are used in environments where notification of potential problems or power outages is essential, ServerGuard with its associated software offers a new level of operational effectiveness. The ServerGuard option will increase the reliability, availability, and serviceability of customer networks. These increases are achieved by alerting the customer to possible hardware or disk capacity problems when preset limits are reached. Using functions provided by the software, problems can then be resolved remotely. PUBLICATIONS The Installation and Users Guide (71G5400) is shipped with the product. Additional copies will not be available. Software publication part numbers will be added as they become available. An IBM PS/2 ServerGuard Hardware Maintenance Service and Reference Supplement will be released with ServerGuard in support of the product.
